... I owned the D40 for a little over two years before purchasing a used D70s in June 2009. On the internet I found there was little information comparing these two cameras and those that did all recommended the D40 over the D70 because of the larger screen and better jpeg quality straight out of camera. From my experience, the D40 is also noticably better at high ISOs and the auto white balance is a bit warmer.
Despite these facts, I am very happy with my decision to swap to a D70s. The external controls make the camera a pleasure to use. It is quick to change ISO and white balance (including preset white balance and white balance fine tuning) and flash exposure compensation and flash mode, all without using menus. These make camera operation much faster. The matrix meter on the D70s is significantly better than the D40's. The D40 consistently overexposes dark-coloured objects (or pets!) leading to blown highlights in the rest of the scene, and exposure compensation continually needs to be applied. This isn't a big deal for still objects but for moving creatures you don't always get a second chance! Another big advantage of the D70s is the ability to autofocus with AF prime lenses. Since purchasing this camera I have bought a 50mm f/1.4 lens and it has replaced my 18-200mm as the lens I leave on the camera. The low-light performance of this lens far offsets the slight loss in high ISO quality of the camera. It also allows huge control over depth of field which adds a lot of interest and is a lot of fun to play around with!
I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing a camera that was already long out of date, but for my needs it works perfectly! In fact, because of the D70s' meter, I'd choose it over the D80. For the price the D70s is going second hand, it's still a great buy today. ...

... I purchased this item after A LOT of research and looking....LOTS OF LOOKING! Nikon is a supreme camera - and i am a Leica girl my self....but just can't quite get the 1,000's++ together for that!
This kit is perfect for a photographer that needs the 2 basic lens, with the lens filters and extra batteries. I also purchased a 8GIG SD card separately. It would have been great if there was a wide angle lens in this kit as well!
I choose the D60 because it was a bit smaller and lighter as my hand is small, so i could grasp it better. I went to a local camera store to try out all the models and this was the best. 10.1 MegaPixels is a plus for any photographer - you have the option to save your best shots for printing and then reduce the res. for the web.....always good to shoot at the highest resolution. There is an option for shooting RAW images as well which is great! The D60 is far better than the D40 or the 40X, IMHO! The bigger cameras were just too big and heavy and i would not like to carry it around. This camera is light and i do carry it around with me everywhere i go.
The camera is awesome - included was all the kit accessories - so i was good to go right out of the box....i juiced up all the batteries and went shooting away!!!
I was a little leary of buying a bundled kit online like this - but there was the guarantee and the usual warranties....All the accessories came in the manufacturers packaging and was new. The pricing of the this was equal to what i was looking at in the stores - but for the body only!!! this is a great deal.....
Cameta's service was excellent - the packaging was excellent and i received it in record time. They even contacted me to make sure my package arrived and if everything was OK....now that is service!!!
i would recommend this bundle for serious photographers and buy your own case, that would suit you. you can always pick up SD cards and i prefer the well known name brands, over knock offs.
